A year after they published their work on a physiological test for autism, the research team confirmed the success of the test with a follow-up study. Physiological testing that supports the clinician's diagnostic process has the potential to reduce the age at which the child is diagnosed and to provide early treatment. The results of the study using an algorithm based on metabolites in the blood sample have been published in recent days. jenny mccarthy autism

The team, which looked at groups of children who were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder independently of previous work, achieved similar successes. They were able to predict success in 88 percent of children with autism. jenny mccarthy autism

Early diagnosis in autism is considered to lead to better outcomes because of early intervention in children. However, since diagnosis depends only on clinical observations, most children are able to diagnose autism after 4 years of age. jenny mccarthy autism

Rather than seeking a single indicator of autism spectrum disorder, the developed approach uses large data techniques to look for patterns in metabolites related to two cellular pathways (a series of interactions between molecules that control cell function) associated with suspected links. jenny mccarthy autism

Algorithm Examines 24 Metabolites
The first success in 2017 analyzed the data of a group of 149 people who were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in about half of them. For each member of the group, researchers obtained two cell pathways and 24 metabolism-related data. These were the metabolites of the methionine cycle and of the trans-sulphation pathway. Researchers who deliberately neglected the data of a group of individuals subjected the remaining data set to advanced analysis techniques and used the results to construct a prediction algorithm. The algorithm then made an estimate of the data coming from the skipped individual. The method correctly identified 96.1 percent of all participants and 97.6 percent of the autism spectrum disorder group. jenny mccarthy autism

The new study applies researchers' approach to an independent data set. Hahn and his team explored existing data sets containing metabolites that they analyzed in the original study to avoid a lengthy data collection process with clinical trials. The researchers identified appropriate data from three different studies involving a total of 154 autistic children conducted by researchers at the Arkansas Institute of Child Research. The data contained only 22 of the 24 metabolites they used to construct the original predictive algorithm, but Hahn determined that the available information would be sufficient for testing. jenny mccarthy autism

Results With Second Study Confirmed
The team used this approach to reconstruct the predictive algorithm, and this time it used 22 metabolite data from the initial 149 children. The algorithm was then applied to a new group of 154 children for testing purposes. When each individual prediction algorithm is applied, the autism predicted with 88% accuracy.jenny mccarthy autism

Hahn said that the difference between the original accuracy rate and the results of the new study may depend on several factors, most importantly, two of the metabolites in the second data set. Each of the two metabolites has been a strong indicator of previous work. In general, the second study confirmed the original results and provided information on various variables related to the approach. jenny mccarthy autism

The research team intends to develop the test and put the consumer version into service. jenny mccarthy autism
